What Is the USDA EQIP Program?

EQIP โ€” the Environmental Quality Incentives Program โ€” is a voluntary USDA program administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). It provides financial and technical assistance to farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners to implement conservation practices on their land.

In plain terms: the government pays you back a portion of the cost to do qualifying conservation work on your property โ€” including forestry mulching, brush clearing, and land management practices that Grit and Iron LLC specializes in.

EQIP is funded annually and applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Funding is competitive โ€” the earlier you apply, the better your chances of receiving cost-share for the current fiscal year.

Veterans and historically underserved producers receive priority consideration and higher payment rates under EQIP's Historically Underserved Producer provisions.

Why EQIP Matters for Your Land

  • Reduces your out-of-pocket cost for land clearing
  • Improves pasture, grazing, and agricultural productivity
  • Reduces wildfire and invasive species risk
  • Improves water quality and soil health
  • Increases property value and usable acreage
  • Veterans receive priority and higher payment rates
  • No repayment required โ€” it's a cost-share grant

EQIP-Eligible Practices We Perform

These NRCS practice codes are commonly used for forestry mulching and land clearing work in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Your local NRCS office will determine which apply to your property and situation.

Practice 314

Brush Management

Removal or control of unwanted woody plants โ€” including cedar, scrub oak, and invasive brush โ€” to improve pasture, wildlife habitat, or fire risk reduction.

Practice 490

Woody Residue Treatment

Treatment of woody material on-site through mulching and grinding. Reduces fire hazard and improves site conditions without burning or hauling.

Practice 666

Forest Stand Improvement

Thinning and clearing to improve the health and productivity of forest stands. Reduces overcrowding and improves tree quality and wildlife habitat.

Practice 384

Firebreak Establishment

Creating cleared areas to slow or stop the spread of wildfire. Protects structures, timber, and livestock on rural and woodland properties.

Practice 338

Prescribed Burning (Alt)

Where burning is not practical or permitted, forestry mulching serves as an effective mechanical alternative to achieve the same resource objectives.

Practice 512

Pasture & Hay Planting Prep

Land clearing and preparation for establishing improved pasture or hay production. Includes removal of brush and woody vegetation from fields.

How to Get EQIP Cost-Share

2026 Update โ€” More Funding Available

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act just delivered the largest long-term investment in NRCS conservation programs in decades โ€” over $18.3 billion for EQIP through fiscal year 2031. This means more funding, more approved applications, and more opportunity for Oklahoma and Arkansas landowners to get reimbursed for eligible work.

1

Call Grit and Iron First

Before you do anything, give us a call at 918-708-1014. We offer a free site visit to walk your property, assess what needs to be cleared, and help you understand what EQIP practices may apply to your land. We've done this before and can help you go into the NRCS meeting prepared.

2

Contact Your Local NRCS Office

Reach out to your county USDA Service Center to schedule an initial consultation. Tell them you're interested in EQIP for forestry mulching or brush management. They will assign you a conservationist who will guide you through the process. We've listed all local office contacts at the bottom of this page.

3

NRCS Site Visit & Conservation Plan

Your NRCS conservationist will visit your property to assess your land's natural resource concerns โ€” things like brush encroachment, erosion risk, or wildlife habitat. Together you'll develop a conservation plan that identifies the specific practices to implement and sets your goals. This plan is your roadmap for the entire process.

4

Submit Your EQIP Application

NRCS accepts applications year-round, but each state sets specific deadlines for ranking and funding. Your NRCS agent will help you complete and submit the application. Applications are ranked competitively โ€” priority is given to landowners addressing high-resource-concern areas. Veterans and historically underserved producers receive higher payment rates and priority ranking.

5

Application Ranked & Contract Offered

If your application is selected, NRCS will offer you a contract outlining the approved practices, payment rates, and timeline. โš ๏ธ Critical: Do not start any work until your contract is fully signed. Work completed before the contract is executed is not eligible for reimbursement โ€” no exceptions.

6

Advance Payment (If Eligible)

Historically underserved producers โ€” including veterans and Native American landowners โ€” may be eligible to receive an advance payment before the work begins. This can help cover upfront costs. Ask your NRCS agent about advance payment eligibility when you receive your contract offer.

7

Schedule Grit and Iron to Do the Work

Once your contract is signed, call us at 918-708-1014 to schedule your project. We work directly with your NRCS conservationist to make sure all work is completed to NRCS practice standards and that all required documentation is in order. We handle the field โ€” you handle the paperwork with NRCS.

8

NRCS Practice Certification

After the work is complete, your NRCS conservationist will inspect the site to certify that the practices were implemented correctly and meet all standards. This step is required before any payment is released. We make sure our work is done right the first time so certification goes smoothly.

9

Receive Your Cost-Share Payment

Once the practice is certified, NRCS releases your payment. Payment rates are set annually by NRCS based on local average costs. Depending on the practice and your producer status, cost-share typically covers 50โ€“75% of eligible expenses โ€” and up to 90% for historically underserved producers including veterans and Native American landowners.

10

Maintain & Report (If Required)

Some practices require ongoing management activities during the contract period. Your NRCS conservationist will let you know if any annual reporting or maintenance is required to remain in compliance with your contract terms. Conservation Incentive Contracts (CICs) may also offer annual payments for ongoing management.

EQIP FAQ

Payment rates vary by county, practice, and fiscal year. NRCS sets rates based on local average costs. In many Oklahoma counties, brush management and woody residue treatment practices can cover 50โ€“75% of eligible costs. Contact your local NRCS office for current payment rates in your county.
Not necessarily. EQIP is available to agricultural producers โ€” which includes farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners with eligible land. If your land has agricultural or forestry use (even grazing or timber), you may qualify. Your NRCS agent will assess your eligibility during a site visit.
No. This is critical โ€” work done before your EQIP contract is signed and in place is NOT eligible for reimbursement. You must have a fully executed contract before any work begins. Grit and Iron LLC will not begin work on EQIP projects until we confirm your contract is signed.
EQIP applications are accepted on a rolling basis and evaluated in funding pools. Approval timelines vary but typically range from a few weeks to several months depending on funding availability and your state's ranking process. Apply early โ€” funding is limited each fiscal year.
Yes. Veterans are considered Historically Underserved Producers under EQIP, which means priority consideration in ranking, higher payment rates (up to 90% cost-share in some cases), and access to reserved funding pools. Grit and Iron LLC is veteran-owned, and we understand this process firsthand.
We can help you understand the process and get connected with your local NRCS office โ€” but the application itself must be completed with your NRCS agent. We're familiar with the local offices in Adair and Cherokee Counties and can give you a head start. Call us at 918-708-1014 and we'll walk you through it.
